In Western Countries, especially in United States, people, included in some acupuncturists themself, treat acupuncture as the whole Chinese medicine, and over focus on the style of “family doctor’ like–one acupuncturist or Chinese medicine practioner could treats all different conditions. i.e. he or she trys the pain condition due to neurological/muscular or skeleton problem, also handle some OB/GYN condition, also for other internal medicine issue, etc.
It is true, one acupuncturist or Chinese medicine practioner should handle many issue because Chinese medicine is a holistic medicine and based on the principle of Taoism, which focuses on understanding the basic LAW of universe and simplify the diagostic and treatment procedure–using minimal effort to get maximal results/effects.
However, DO NOT TO FORGET, in another side of Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine also trys to understand more detail in examinations and makes speciafic treatments, even use some chemical medications, if the condition permits. So, in history, Chinese medicine develops many specialties. For exemple, 2000 years ago, there were four specialties; in 1000 years ago, there were 13 specilties; in current China, the specialties in Chinese medicine are almost same as in western medicine.
The reason of so many specialties in Chinese medicine, is giving the patient more professional examination and treatments, after the treatments, also providing result/effectiveness evulation system.
For example, when we meet a patient who has hearing loss, both patient and practioner should know what type of this hearing loss, although we should know the diagnosis (say, Zheng or the patterns) in Chinese medicine, also need know the diagnosis in conventional(say, what disease or type). And more important, after the treatment (acupuncture or Chinese herbology), we need the hearing test to see -if it is improved or nothing changed and in numbers-not just say I feel improved.
For fertility, we need know why the patient have infertility, is treatable or not. If it is treatable, after the treatment, is there any change in pattern? in hormon value?
So, we should establish a set of diagnosis, treatment and evaluation system, establish the specialties system—it will take time. In China, it takes several decades to set up Chinese medicine hospital and has developed many specialties.
The main idea is, keeping the important core stuff from Taoism Chinese medicine, focus on Zheng or Pattern, and keeping the tradition of natural or organic medicine; also getting some important knowledge from original another style of Chinese medicine, focus on diseases which is more close to current conventional medicine, establishing the specialties in Chinese medicine in western countries, which will benefit patients.
