After graduated from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine(Nanjing, China, 1986), Dr.Fan worked 16 years in Nanjing Municipal Hospital of Chinese medicine (i.e. The Third Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, which has 420 beds in Inpatient department, many specialties in Out patient department-half million patient visits per year).
He had 6 years as a resident doctor (in China, the hospital treats the Resident doctor as employee), 5 years attending doctor, 4 years vice-director doctor. During resident to attending period, he had one year training in another hospital in neurology. During attending to vice-director doctor period, he finished his PhD program in Chinese Internal Medicine and apprenticed under Dr.Zhou Zhongying, a famous Chinese medicine doctor in China.
He had both Chinese medicine and conventional medicine licenses in China(at that time, the original Chinese term is called CHU FANG QUAN, “the prescription right” , which was approved by government HealthCare committee). When he was in China, his former specialty was in Internal Medicine, Neurology. Because the characteristics of Chinese Medicine (holistic), Dr.Fan also treated many patients who has GYN(such as infertility), ENT issues, when they also have internal problems.
After came in United States(2001), he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Georgetown University and University of Maryland, focused on Chinese herbology/dietary supplements and acupuncture research; before his coming, Dr.Fan had some reseach work in China too, which helped him understand conventional(“scientific”) methodology and has increased his clinical integrative ability in understanding and treating patients-if the patient has extensive examinations and conventional treatments.
